Today is the last day for candidates to submit their applications for the parliamentary elections. The date of December 6 for the upcoming elections is heavily disputed by the PSD (Social Democratic Party), who has the current majority of seats in the Parliament. They are asking for the postponement of the elections until next year, due to the rapid increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in the last weeks.
On the other side, the opposition parties, PNL and USR, are pushing for the elections in December. On December 20 the current mandate of MPs expires and the Constitution will allow them to pass only a limited set of laws, leaving Romania with a weak Parliament during a full sanitary and economic crisis.
Romanian President Klaus Iohannis declared yesterday that the elections should still take place in December this year, as this is the only valid democratic solution which will allow us to have a new, representative Legislative body., which will support the government activity for the implementation of reforms needed for the development of the country.
The current PSD majority in Parliament is no longer representing the actual will of the people. Instead of supporting solutions for resolving the health crisis, Social Democrats have delayed and blocked measures to manage the pandemic and passed populist laws.
